Happy Birthday, Murica!

Happy Birthday, ‘Murica! After that, we settled down, started snacking, and listened to the Pops play music from West Side Story to swing to a celebration of the Roaring 20s. Other musical guests were interspersed in the performance, including Megan Hilty (of Broadway fame and the TV show Smash), the Boston Children’s Chorus, and the Beach Boys (who started performing over 50 years ago… I felt so young and n00bish). One interesting thing about sitting and listening to the performance live rather than watching on TV is that the commercial breaks are just silent pauses, or occasionally the conversation of the announcers if the sound operator forgets to silence the microphones. At around 10pm, the hosts of the Pops show announced that they would be skipping the 1812 Overture and jumping straight to the fireworks show because Hurricane Arthur was predicted to arrive in 45 minutes. And the show was amazing; I can’t help but marvel at how much skill the pyrotechnicians must have to design and execute such a beautiful display. My friend Jamal E. ’13 took a couple pictures (be warned: cell phone quality), so I’ll stick those in here. Immediately after the show ended and the applause of thousands of onlookers died down, the police loudspeaker came on and ordered for an emergency evacuation of the area. Speakers were collapsed, people gradually scattered, and, as soon as my friends and I had made it back to MacGregor, a thunderstorm hit. And by hit, I mean a torrent of horizontal rain and wind swept across the sky and ground and buffeted everyone still wandering about outside. People screamed in surprise and ran for cover, a few tried to futilely hide behind umbrellas as the wind collapsed the plastic around their bodies, and the strange mixture of thunder and lightning and an emergency siren echoed throughout the gales. Last night seemed to be the worst part of the thunderstorms, though, as the hurricane appears to be passing by Boston with only a moderate amount of wind and rain today as it continues to move up the East Coast. On this grey day, though, my friends and I are staying inside, watching World Cup games, making take-and-bake pizza and s’mores fudgcicles, and just having a lazy day off while the rest of the nation prepares for huge celebrations tonight. It’s weird; like being in a different time zone from the rest of the United States. But then I think about how strange the 4th of July celebrations must seem for anyone who didn’t grow up in this country, and wonder how it came to be that we launch exploding pyrotechnics into the sky to celebrate the idea of freedom. Anyway… back to TV, now, and painting nails with a friend. And happy 4th to those that celebrate this particular somewhat-arbitrary holiday.

Contrary to some rumors, we have not seen a change in scaling or test â€Å"difficulty.† The ACT is holding off on an overhaul and has been relatively stable since the last reworking in 1989. This stability provides some real advantages versus the uncertainty surrounding the New SAT. The Top 4 Changes to the ACT 1) A paired passage was introduced on Reading as of June 2014. Students should see one pair on each Reading test. It can fall on any of the passage types within Reading. We have not found that the associated questions are any harder than other questions, but we do not want the format to take students by surprise. There will still be 10 questions related to the pair typically split with four questions on the first passage, three or four on the second passage, and two or three comparing the passages. ACT clearly labels which questions refer to which passage or passages and will always present the question blocks in order. The questions do not require any new techniques. 2) As of October 2014, students may see 6 or 7 Science passages. In the past, ACT Science was comprised of 7 passages. In future test forms, Science may contain either 6 or 7 passages. Consequently, the number of questions per passage can no longer be used to distinguish among Data Representation, Research Summary, and Conflicting Viewpoints. Students should immediately flip to the end of Science to assess passage count – this will help with planning. We recommend that students develop timing guidelines based on question milestones rather than passage number. For example, a student should think about where he or she wants to be after 10, 20, and 30 questions. This planning makes students less susceptible to timing errors due to varying passage count. 3) The September 2015 ACT will have an entirely new essay (ACT Writing). Writing remains optional on test day, but many colleges will continue to require the essay. Most Compass students should plan on taking ACT Writing. Because the change happens in September, class of 2016 students taking the ACT in the spring and fall will have to worry about two different essay types. The changes are significant enough that additional preparation should take place. The new essay will give three perspectives on a topic and expect a more thorough development of ideas and analysis around those perspectives. In the ACT’s own words: â€Å"While the current ACT Writing test is an exercise in classic persuasion, the enhanced ACT Writing test presents students with a rhetorical purpose that is more broadly argumentative.† The essay will be lengthened to allow for the added expectations. Students will receive scores in 4 different areas. Exact scoring has not yet been finalized. 4) ACT has been running expanded pilot programs for computer-based testing. We strongly encourage students to avoid  this pilot (there have already been some hiccups) and stick with traditional testing. The paper-and-pencil ACT is not going away. Why is this happening? ACT has always made an effort to have â€Å"curriculum aligned† material. This alignment has become even more important as they go after statewide contracts. ACT and College Board are both trying to offer a more consistent testing experience across all grade levels, so some of the refinements bring things in line with ACT’s elementary and middle school tests.

A Cynics Enlightenment Raymond Carver’s short-story Cathedral is outwardly about a pessimistic man, whose wife’s blind visitor named Robert changes the narrators predisposing perception of the world and awakes a new view on life in the process. But inwardly, the story is about the desperate need for connection between these three characters, which isn’t feasible do to the emotional-detachment by the narrator. In the beginning, the narrator is hindered by his prejudices which doesn t allow him connect to anything greater than himself. There was more to the onset of the war then the event of an Austrian prince being murdered in Serbia, as is what most people consider to be the cause of World War I. Furthermore, the effects of the war were not just concentrated to a post-war era lasting for a generation of Westerners. No, the effects of the war were widespread throughout the world and can be traced to generations after the war..It is not a rare occasion that when a person is asked what the causes of World War I were, that they answer with the simple comment of an Austrian Prince being shot in Serbia. However the assignation of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie , in Sarajevo was not the main cause of the Great War. Rather, it was the breaking point for Austria in its dealings with Serbia. The truth of the matter is that several factors played a role in the outbreak of the catastrophic war the engulfed the nations of Europe for over four years. World War I truly was the result of building aggressions among the countries of Europe which was backed by the rise of nationalism. To add to the disastrous pot, there was also imperial competition along with the fear of war prompting military alliances and an arms race. All of these increased the escalating tensions that lead to the outbreak of a world war. (Mckay, pg. 904)Two opposing alliances developed by the Bismarckian diplomacy after the Franco- Prussian War was one of the major causes of the war. In order to diplomatically isolate France, Bismarck formed the Three Emperors League in 1872, which was an alliance between Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary. Then in 1882 , Bismarck took advantage of Italian resentment toward France and formed the Triple Alliance between Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungry. In 1890 Bismarck was dismissed from his office and France took the opportunity to gain an ally, therefore , in 1891 the Franco- Russian Entente was formed. Then in 1904 Britain and France put aside their conflicts and formed the Entente Cordiale. As a result , the Triple Entente , a coalition between Great Britain, France , and Russia, countered the Triple Alliance. Now Europe was divided up into two armed camps.(World Book Encyclopedia, WXYZ, pg. 367)Nationalism also played a major role in developing tensions in Europe; for it had been causing dissatisfaction since the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In that settlement the preservment of peace was chosen over nationalism, therefore, Germany and Italy were left as divided states, though they did unify in the future. The Franco- Prussian War in 1871 resulted in the Frances loss of the province of Alasce- Lorraine to Germany, and the French looked forward to regaining their lands. Then there was Austria- Hungary which controlled many lands that their neighbors felt belonged to them. Serbia wanted Bosnia and Hercegovina, Italy wanted the Trentino and Tries te regions, and the Czechs and Solvaks wanted independence from Austria- Hungrey. There was also Russia which had problems within its own boundaries; for Russia contained many different nationalities and many were also seeking independence in the name of nationalism. With the hostile divisions of the nations of Europe there came the expansion of armies and navies. Furthermore, the great powers came to copy Germanys military organization and efficiency, which called for universal registration for military duty, large reserves and detailed planning. Efforts were made for universal disarmament, but the international rivalry caused the arms race to continue to feed on itself. In Afri ca there were two crises in Morocco. The first time, in 1905, Germany full heartedly supported Moroccos call for independence from France, and with the British defending the French war was only avoided because of an international conference which made Morocco a French protectorate. The second crisis occurred in 1911, and it was in protest to French supremacy in Morocco. The Germans finally gave the French a free hand in Morocco, but with a price. They demanded in exchange a portion if of the French Congo. Around this same era there was also a Bosnian crisis, which began with Austria- Hungarys takeover of the province of Bosnia in 1908. For this Serbia threatened war on Austria- Hungary with the pledged backing of Russia. As they began to mobilize, Austria- Hungary , with the alliance of Germany, threaten war on Russia. When Russia backed down, the soon to be war was postponed, but left was a greatly strained relationship between Serbia and Austria Hungary. (Karpilovsky, World Wide W eb)On June 28, 1914 the battle lines were drawn with the assassinations in Sarajevo. It was believed that the crime was committed by a Serbian nationalist, and immediately following it Germany , with its full support pledged, pressed Austria- Hungary into declaring war on Serbia. At this same time, France was strengthening its backing of Russia. War might have been avoided if Serbia had excepted Austria- Hungarys harsh ultimatum, however they faithfully refused. Almost at once the war fell into place. Austria declared war on July 28, 1914. The next day Russia mobilized against Austria- Hungary, on August 1st Germany declared war on Russia, and two days later on France. When Germany disregarded Belgiums neutrality, Britain declared war on Germany. Finally war had begun, and unlike the predictions that had been made the resulting war was long, indecisive, and reeked havoc on the nations of Europe. (Karpilovsky, World Wide Web)The Great War officially ended in January of 1919 with a pe ace conference in Paris which represented twenty- seven triumphant nations. However almost immediately the great powers, United States, Great Britain, and France, were at odds with each other. President Wilson, the representative of the United States, was insist on first and foremost dealing with the creation of the League of Nations; while France and Britain on punishing Germany. In the long run France gave up on having a buffer zone between itself and Germany for a defensive alliance with the United States and Britain, and Wilson got the formation of the League of Nations. In the treaty, all of Germanys colonies were divided among the nations, thought it sustained minor losses of territory within Europe. The many industries that had been based on the war effort were no longer needed, thereby unemployment was on the rise, and the government had secured many debts to succeed in the war. With these aspects , and poor economic policies in many nations present it seemed that an economic crisis would occur sooner or later; which it did. In 1929 the American stock marke t came to a crashing halt, leaving many investors wiped out and the wealthy and confident without money. In the aftermath, banks began to fall because many loans feel through. With the financial crisis also came a decrease of production, and naturally this lead to widespread unemployment. Soon the giant figure shows itselfThe Imperial Luna class cruiser ‘Kingfisher ’. With the powerful canons on it, the orks are completely in a mess. â€Å"We made it! We made it!†Charles shouts excited â€Å"Here are our reinforcements!† â€Å"Yeah!!!!† The last ten guards burst into cheers. â€Å"All right guards!†Charles stands out from the bunker â€Å"Let’s fight back!†He shouts â€Å"Imperial Guard! Attack!† He holds his chainsaw sword and rushes towards the green sea in front of him â€Å"For the Emperor!!!†The sawtooth of high-speed rotation cuts a head of an ork easily, with blood splashing on his face. â€Å"For the Emperor!!!† So excitedly did the ten guards follow his step, hold their lasgun and shoot madly. A big shadow appears from the horizon, it’s the Leman Russ main Battle Tank, with 101st on its armor. The 400mm main gun can lacerate orks’ bodies easily, and three heavy bolters[L5] on it could destroy everything which dares to approach them. Then, another two Leman Russ Tanks appear. â€Å"It’s a tank squad!† Charles shouts excited. Then, more and more tanks appear and after these tanks, there are Armoured Fist Squads[L6], Veteran Squads and the best of all—the Storm Troopers, with Hellgun[L7] in their hands. â€Å"Goddamnedhumans!!!!† A roar comes with anger. â€Å"A Warboss!† Charles screamed â€Å"Attention guards!† Then a big self-made missile fires from the green sea. â€Å"BOOM!!!† The Leman Russ tank in the front was destroyed in a second. But obviously its’ rude behaviour attracts more and more attentions.
